Why did Affymetrix acquire eBio?

I'm considering making an investment in Affymetrix but don't understand their recent eBioscience acquisition. Could someone please explain how this acquisition benefits Affymetrix? At first glance it doesn't seem to make much sense.

I still don't understand why

I still don't understand why Affy bought eBio?!?! I've spoken with dozens of experts within the industry and nobody is able to offer a reasonable explanation. Makes no sense.

The GOOD NEWS is that the

The GOOD NEWS is that the Chinese have been ready to step in and fill the gap for years. Don't fret.

Frank broke the camel's back

Frank broke the camel's back with the eBio acquisition. Horrible and criminal!

Very true!!! Yes, more than

Very true!!! Yes, more than likely Affy is in store for a horrible Q4. We will see.

Maybe the assimilation will

Maybe the assimilation will so alienate past customers that they will have the worst quarter in history. That's much more likely.

Touch 1 for discontinued arrays
Touch 2 for discontinued antibodies
Touch 3 to sell your affy stock
Touch 4 to return faulty products with restocking fee of 25%
Touch 5 for technical support eternal hold line
Touch 0 for operator to hang up on you

Maybe eBio will have a strong

Maybe eBio will have a strong Q4 and save Affy.

It does seem like this

It does seem like this acquisition was made out of complete desperation without evaluating all the options. I feel sorry for Frank, he made a very bad move.

It's almost as if Affy was

It's almost as if Affy was acting out of complete desperation and didn't really think this through whatsoever.

It's almost exactly like that. That's what we in the business call "due diligence".

Frank trusted a potato-head

Frank trusted a potato-head with a man's job. You can't do that in this day and age.

The purchase of eBio was a

The purchase of eBio was a complete mistake which seems to have accelerated the downward spiral of Affymetrix.

I'm very glad I didn't

I'm very glad I didn't purchase any Affy stock when starting this post! I was seriously considering buying when the stock was at $4.25 prior to their horrible Q3 earnings announcement. After conducting a vast amount of research I've concluded the eBio acquisition was a big mistake.

"I'm fairly certain that

"I'm fairly certain that Affy's misfortune is just due to bad luck, certainly not incompetence. These people are the brightest in the business."

LOL! Thanks for the laugh!

Is Affy at risk of being

Is Affy at risk of being removed from NASDAQ because if their latest "bad luck" of giving away all their cash and not getting anything strategic for it? Can they stay afloat with no cash left? There was potential when they had cash and not there seems to be no hope of a future. Where does it go from here? Can they ride out another 10% drop (or worse) if it happens again? What's the real scoop?

You are completely stupid or just a worthless troll.

I'm fairly certain that

I'm fairly certain that Affy's misfortune is just due to bad luck, certainly not incompetence. These people are the brightest in the business.

They just were unlucky in all of their acquisitions.
A long string of bad luck.

Is anyone doing financial

Is anyone doing financial analysis at Affy?

Sure, but it's personal financial analysis. What's best for me (the M&A person), not what's best for the company. You'll find it everywhere in corporate America.

Affymetrix has a history of

Affymetrix has a history of making horrible acquisitions. Parallele, Panomics, TruMaterials, USB, and eBio. I'm not sure if this is incompetence or just poor luck? Affy is a $3 stock at best. Still overvalued at $3.50 with expression microarray business declining rapidly. It will be a penny stock soon.

Is anyone doing financial

Is anyone doing financial analysis at Affy? It looks like eBio was worth about half what they paid for it. Is this incompetence or something worse? Who benefited from this transaction?

Great acquisition Frank!

Great acquisition Frank! You spent all of Affy's cash for a company which fell short of revenue expectations.

Pathetic!!!

Affy's earnings were just released for Q3 and their stock immediately dropped 16%.

Sell.....

Sell.....

The reason can be summarized

The reason can be summarized in one word..... DESPERATION.

Affymetrix is experiencing a slow painful death.

Just review their quarterly reports and it will all make sense.

It would be a good idea to

It would be a good idea to look closely at Affy's quarterly reports before making any purchase decision. The eBio acquisition was a huge mistake and a desperate attempt to purchase a growing revenue stream. Flow reagents do not compliment Affy's core competency and this was the final nail in the coffin.

It appears this acquisition

It appears this acquisition was made in an effort to bring in some growth to offset the steadily declining array business. Unfortunately for Affy the eBio business is not doing well and they spent all their precious cash to make this acquisition. This acquisition does not compliment Affy's core business and spreads them too thin which was already a problem considering the floundering Panomics unit. This is just another example of horrible leadership at the top making desperate decisions. It would be a mistake to purchase any Affy stock.

Affy needed a business to

Affy needed a business to offset the bloodletting of the rest of the company. That's why. Just look at their quarterly reports.

Welcome to the club...I've

Welcome to the club...I've yet to meet anyone who thinks Affy's purchase was sensible, or anyone who thinks they understand it. To my mind it's an admission that Affy sees low growth for its core business in its future, and is thrashing around exploring white space without much in the way of a guiding strategy.

Personally, I wouldn't be buying Affy shares.

I'm looking at Affymetrix

I'm looking at Affymetrix from a biotech value stock perspective and microarrays seem to be making progress in clinical diagnostics. I just don't know if Affymetrix is trying to move into flow cytometry with this acquisition. It doesn't make sense from the outside and hope someone can provide insight.

Why would you put money in

Why would you put money in AFFX? Take a good hard look at recent performance and management decisions, then buy some blue chips. You'll be much happier.
