What'sthe fall out of this one ?
It appears that a few deptartments at the Frederick site are up in the air due to redundancy. Thermo already has a very nice distribution center on the east coast so Distribution in Frederick will probably shut down. I dont hold out much hope for the IT dept either.
I am interested in the Information Technology perspective. LIFE has several old legacy systems that are not worth the hardware they run on. My understanding is that TMO has a large data center in the NE area and am concern of the longevity of the one in MD.
Anyone can start discussion about R&D structure and culture in Life or Thermo...
Probably the IP value mentioned in the books is related to number of patent lawyers. So be aware on IP depreciations which will be made soon to have the loss this year and profits in the next years. Perhaps this move is stopped by moody's when the balance becomes really red.
I am guessing the most senior legal guys may do okay, but most of the 25-30 patent attorneys/agents will add to the national surplus of biotech patent attorneys.
The head of IP legal got up in front of his group and told everybody that their jobs were safe!
Just need to parse the language correctly. Of course their jobs are safe. It's just that someone else will be several of them.
Thermo has a very small legal group for its size. There will be big downsizing following this acquisition.
They say that the Thermo legal department is organized quite differently from Life too.
That is pretty funny considering the head of IP legal himself will but out first.
So What? When I worked for Invitrogen, I can't tell you how many times I heard that lie. Get it in writing...
No need to worry about the patent groups. Smart people were viewed as a threat and LIFE layed-off, fired or drove-off the most talented innovators. All that's left are a few hold-outs at Ion, and they are about to get a big surprise with the coming layoffs.
I disagree, get rid of the shady finance people who are cooking the books first, then the asswipes in hr, it will make the rest of the cuts reasonable
Hahaha...as has already been pointed out, Life's IP department sucks. They should be laid off first.
Speaking of trolls...
Troll Busters made mince meat out of crappy Life Tech patents. There's nothing left to license.
Good article on fool.com, overpriced? just cut more deeply in 2014!
"It's the story of one overpriced company buying another company that's an even worse bargain, which resulted in a medical equipment behemoth that's even more egregiously overpriced than the two companies were separately."
Not completely true (you are largely describing patent agents). While the lawyers don't do the inventing, their skills in crafting claims and traversing prosecution, can make or break a patent's issuance...and strength. Don't shoot down the importance of the licensing folks either, as they are responsible for bringing in the products and technologies that fuel the commercial engine.
Uhm, patent lawyers don't come up with patents, they just do the paper work. If the R&D engine is broken it doesn't matter how many patent lawyers you have on staff. Life execs are all business people so they have no cognition of how to manage innovation and product development. The best they could do was gamble on buying other people's stuff, most of which did not end well.
Those overpaid patent lawyers make 200K for doing nothing of value for the company. As an earlier poster pointed out, 30 patent lawyers and no good inventions or patents. Plus, they lost a few big lawsuits. Sad...what were those a--holes doing all that time?
IP and Licensing jobs are few and far between. Likely they will need outplacement assistance to transition to different roles, and good luck with that. Major lifestyle changes upcoming for them.
Do you think the bloated IP and licensing groups will be laid off early or late?
They're already looking for new jobs.
Hahaha...good luck with finding a new job in this economy for those incompetent jerks in IP legal. Hope they all get laid off sooner than later.
How quickly will it take them to realize that Q-Dots were all smoke and mirrors and can't be reliably manufactured (will never make it to prime time). Bet the entire business is shut down within a year.
Thermo will hopefully keep their planned site closures under wraps until the last second. Invitrogen made the mistake of letting word slip about their plan (at the time) to close down the Frederick site and move operations to Carlsbad and they ended up paying out retention bonuses and better severence packages then they would have liked to keep people from heading for the exits before they were ready to get rid of them.
The patents ran out
The patents ran out because an new patentable ideas were reviewed by the business teams, that were run by marketing and MBAs and bean counter. They were never seen as value as they were not pastel colors nor came with a free T shirt so were disregarded. Some of the ideas that were placed on lifetech and Invitrogens bloated table were each worth the offer price. The balance needs to come back, the management has totally screwed the pooch.
Lol.... You are twisted. If you think that you are off the charts.
Come and meet my numerous angry Thermo customers who got shit on by poor after sales care.
Literally will not buy thermo products as institute policy, unless forced.
Bunch of jokers. Get off your butt plug you gimp.
Marc Casper can run a company - and well. TMO's culture is the exact opposite of Life - down to earth people that focus on results. TMO ain't perfect, but it doesn't miss the numbers. Most Life-techers won't make it at TMO, or be happy, because there is way less blowing smoke up the proverbial a--. And consider the days of over-spending officially gone...no more business class for Life-tech...
30 patent lawyers and no real inventions for many years explains much.
The patents ran out.. Thats why they positioned themselves for a buyout... From a dirty whore corporation. All certain companies do is fuck things up. Buy something and rape the shit out of it.
"Patents of what? patent of a gene, patent of dna hybridization, patents of PCR, patents of me-too 454 sequencing..."
Oh, your the smart one. Now get back to your toilet duty.
Afraid you have one thing backwards. The Caliper management in place at PerkinElmer are in charge, not the PerkinElmer management. Any downward sales spiral of Caliper products rests squarely on the Caliper management team, who are also responsible for the ongoing debacle in LST sales. KH and MR are going to wear this one alone.
Lifetech patents could be important to a DX company in the future.
Patents of what? patent of a gene, patent of dna hybridization, patents of PCR, patents of me-too 454 sequencing...
You sir, is a moron.
The future of Life and Thermo is no mystery. All one needs to do is take a gander at Perkin Elmer now, after they acquired and ruined Caliper life sciences. Their customers have been fleeing in droves, and what employees are left are all looking for jobs elsewhere.
And yes, the HR girls at Life Tech have been caught licking one another at lunchtime behind the bldg off the canyon. There are pics floating around from that.
So they are not c@$ts, just dykes

Until you have met said "woman" keep your opinions to your self, anyway cu*t is too good a description for the nasty bitch.

I also look forward to watching the blood-letting in Carlsbad. It's about time they got a taste of how they have treated all their acquisitions.
I honestly hope Carlsbad gets slammed with 40-50% cuts, especially the Program Management group. I have never before seen such a useless, incompetent bunch of "semi-skilled" idiots. Like Lucifer, their egos consistently blind them to the facts, leading them to make incredibly bad decisions. As a result, all their development programs are a complete joke.
It's a shame that Lucifer is happily lining his pockets on the blood of the innumerable careers he has set-back or ruined. In a perfect world, GL would be required to pay restitution to all the people his stupidity, greed and immense ego have damaged.
I got out before things at AB became truly toxic, but feel for my remaining friends in Foster City. I imagine they are feeling pretty vulnerable right now. Hopefully they will all find better jobs at well run companies.
"HR Bimbos Kate R, and my favorite Heather V."
Never met/dealt with Kate as of yet, but that Heather is a fee simple malignant cunt.
HR Bimbos Kate R, and my favorite Heather V.
I did it, we can't have the truth discussed here.
Lifetech is not in DX.
Danaher got no more intent in Dx.
If you think LIFE is in the Dx field, you got owned by the lucifer.
This amounts to a train wreck with job cuts.
job A needs 6 people
job B needs 4 people
Hold on let us do the math,
Yep, Thermo will need a total of 7 people for both jobs.
That's how it will play out.
To the 3 out the door - good luck and good nite.
"It's far too early for anyone to make assumptions on how this is pan out. It really depends which group you are in. It usually starts with IT and HR, and then trickles down to overlapping technologies."
Life Techs HR dept. definately needs to go, it's run and staffed by Nazi bimbos who dont know shit from Shinola.
Life Tech tends to have terrible service, while Thermo Fisher tends to acquire a lot of large subassemblies that don't integrate well with one another. So, it's anyone's guess how it is all going to work out.
