OK - Let me break it down for you - the problem with this company that is. . .
STUPID PEOPLE (mainly management) like to work with other STUPID PEOPLE, which is why all smart, thoughful, innovative, etc people at this company are laid off or quit as they are pushed out by management. Now, let me explain a few different types of stupid people: people who can't think for themselves, people that have very average or below average education and lots of ass-kissing skills. What I have said may seem funny, but it is true. Who do stupid people hang out with, go to bars with, go to football games with? OTHER STUPID people. They simply don't RELATE to smart evolved, enlightened people. PERIOD. This concept effects every facet of the company. One example of what STUPID people do is waste an enormous amount of time and money HIRING and FIRING an ENORMOUS amount of people. Literally hiring over and over and over and over and wasting money training people that they fire to simply to do the process all over again because they are TOO STUPID to understand a basic concept of business is to KEEP SMART PEOPLE AND LEARN FROM THEM (but you would have to be smart to know this!). It's kind of like (or exactly like) if all the dumb people in your high school or college, etc got power and went through the motions of power - hire, train, fire just to do it. You will notice that since they have been acquired all of this CRAZY and massive hiring/firing process has stopped. This is a tiny example of a drain of probably hundreds of thousands of dollars! There are MANY more examples of crazy (and by crazy I mean stupid) behavior. Another example of the stupidity at this company - their failure to TRUST AND PROMOTE WORKERS THAT HAVE THE EDUCATION TO DO THEIR JOBS - DO NOT trust and promote employees who simply kiss your butt and tell you what you want to hear!!! Huge lesson they should learn. Another concept this company doesn't seem to grasp (that successful companies do) is the concept of employee retention and loyalty. They see EVERY SINGLE employee as expendable. They value no one. They only value money and power. Hope the company that acquired it turns it around (and by turns it around I mean gets rid of the dumb management).
Aperio has an amazing technology and IP portfolio. Smart staff and energetic management.

Aperio was a smart play 5 years ago, and it's a smart play today.

I agree with the previous post. Aperio is a fantastic company with great products that have been proven in the field. Most of the competitors scanners either don't work or aren't being used for lack of decent software to handle the pathology images. Take a look at GE and Phillips they've been trying to match Aperio's technology for years now and haven't been able to. Leica stand a chance but still have a ways to go. I wouldn't be surprised if those bigger players start slashing their entire DP business units because they're finding it hard to catch up or because it's just not profitable enough.
Aperio has made some recent changes which are probably for the better. Getting rid of MS (VP of sales) should have happened years ago. The company, the employees, and the customers are much better off without him. I'm expecting the company will power through tough times and ultimately thrive. They'll also make a nice acquisition for any big players arriving late to the game.
How is this failed digital pathology different from ChromaVision's failed digital pathology technology?
CV's vision was way to narrow. they only focused on the clinical market. Yes some researchers like at MSKC in NY purchased, but the AP world was not ready. Aperio took a different approach, the focused on BioPharm/Research/ and clinical. Their issue was poor sales management over the last few years. Now they probably will do just fine.
the only concern is unless they are purchased by a GE/Siemens/Phillips or even a Thermo they will have a hard time competing against Ventana and Leica once those companies really really get their scanners to top notch products. Those guys can bundle and reagent rent them with their stainers etc...Aperio Can Not!
