Outcome of review to decide plant's fate, The workforce at a city-based biomedical multinational company is frustrated at the continuing uncertainty over the future of their jobs with Christmas on the horizon.
Employees of Beckman Coulter, which is based at Mervue since 1972, nearly 40 years, were told earlier this week that the outcome of a review of the US company’s Irish operations would be conveyed to staff this week.
MD of Beckman Coulter Ireland, Piers Devereux, emailed staff on Tuesday and said an announcement on the future of the Galway and Clare plants will be made this week. One of the plants faces the axe.
The announcement on the review of operations is already about a fortnight overdue – well placed sources at the Mervue operation say an announcement could be made before close of business today (Friday). However, any decision to close Galway or the County Clare operation near Tulla could be delayed until next week or even next year.
The uncertainty for the Galway operation surfaced about two years ago when Beckman Coulter acquired Olympus, which has a base about 15 miles from Ennis just past the town of Tulla.
Then Beckman Coulter was acquired by Danaher, a diverse US technology giant, about a year ago. Danaher announced earlier this year it was seeking an 8% reduction in its global workforce.
One source at the Mervue plant yesterday said the decision on whether Galway or Clare would be closed is “fifty-fifty”.
