It looks like another round of massive layoffs are going to be coming soon across R&D. With the new goal writing and setting expectation forms. I was at a meeting yesterday where HR was called in to "explain" these new ridiculous forms and what was required on them. Essentially they are setting people up to get fired for any excuse. No matter how the DVP and them tried to sugar coat this BS, it was clear what the intention was. Someone was quoted as saying Miles is tired of signing R&Ds paychecks. The strategy now on is going to be buy as many as possible and keep a skeleton crew to do minimal work and fire the rest. The reality at Abbott is that middle management has no idea about developing drugs at all and all strategies are based on other big pharma doing things first. "If Pfizer and Genetech are doing it, it must be good". These morons, specifically project leaders and directors are the ones that need to be fired and people who can actually do science need to be promoted to their positions or hired. All the current lot are, are yes men to people above them, including the DVP. The amount of "data massaging" and misrepresenting information is astounding and the people that do such things are the same people who get rewarded and promoted to higher management. The amount of inbreeding, for a lack of a better analogy would put Kentucky to shame. The people who actually do the work are never given a chance to speak up and state the true scientific facts and are excluded from meetings where decisions are made, in the fear that they may speak up against the party line. Abbott is doomed to failure with these morons at the helm.

Just confirmed that Mary Szela had a ginormous party/"meeting" a swank downtown hotel for approximately 175 people from her department. Someone in the know I was talking to said she spent between $600,000 - $1,000,000 in two days over ridiculously glitzy presentations, each attendee got a telescope as a gift. She spent around $6000/attendee. They hired a comedy club, took people to dinner at swank places and stuff like that. Even people who live and work in Chicago were put in the swank hotel - JW Marriott for 2 nights. You think abbott's campus is too small to host 175 people? it s f$%%ing 420 acre campus with enough room to host a convention! What a f&^%ing waste of money! They fire poor people who earn a honest days living, and this biatch splurges on crap like this and internally promotes panderers and butt lickers. She gave out $700 apple gift cards a few days ago. You want to know WTF is wrong with ABBOTT? THIS IS IT. These kinds of decadent splurges and the self-serving and self-deserving attitude is going to take Abbott down pretty soon. They then cry foul about how money is tight. Tight my a$$! Quit splurging money on useless $hit like this and spend it on actual research. You might get a drug out of it, even just by fluke! You're right Abbott does charge a lot for their products. The amount of money they charge you would expect thier products to be made in the USA, NOT China, Japan, Singapore etc. MW and the Board of Directors are pocketing the money. Then giving the shareholders .44 per share.

With corporate profits etc. up at double digit levels, the corporation as a whole doing very well in this economic/regulatory environment, and given the job market today, it is absolutely unconscionable to layoff people. Dr. Abbott is rolling in his grave. No pipeline - just shows how poorly managed the LRP has been since MDW took the helm. Would have been better to offer some incentive for people close to retirement to do so, and get rid of the slackers (of which there are a few), rather than throw productive, knowledgable, hard working people out on their you-know-whats. I hope the cameras are rolling if MDW ever has a 'Schindler's List' moment. Good luck and God Bless to all who have been 'impacted'. Hope everyone finds jobs with 50% pay increases.

I was laid off and walked out of Abbott yesterday morning. FYI method centered on disembodied voice from afar emanating from phone in middle of table. The Abbott "family" and "caring" / "respect" / "gratitude" / "dignity" etc. were missing from this scenario. Must be a better way, Abbott decision makers, to handle the endings, endings which make the Abbott corporate culture story kind of empty and hypocritical.

According to a post on the Pharmalot Blog, Abbott Laboratories today announced that it will eliminate 1,900 jobs or six percent of its workforce. The company cited its thinning pipeline and the current challenging regulatory environment for the corporate reorganization and downsizing. In other words, we are having trouble getting our new drugs approved and we can’t afford to continue to pay people’s salaries and benefits who aren’t delivering for us. The Pharmalot post didn’t provide specifics on the layoffs. However, Lisa Madden a Delta Pharma Recruiter and BioCrowd member sent me a message and told me that 1,000 of the layed off workers were onsite employees and the remaining 900 were sales reps
