The big question in regard to the split. Will Abbott do away with retirment health care? It seems to me, benifits will be cut, just after both companies are divorced. Get out if you can, lock in your retirement before it happens.

In fact, after the Hospira spinoff, I predicted that the company would be shrunk to be "lean and mean" and end up being bought out. Now it looks like it may be easier to do after the company splits up into 2 almost equal parts. It will be easier to purchase by two other companies rather than one. To a large stockholder, "two halves" may be greater that the "whole" when it comes to a buyout.

A spin off? That sounds great! Along with higher food and fuel prices, why not spin off? I can't wait to see my pension shrink to nothing; not to mention the abbott stock I alraeady own! Put your food trays in the up and locked position, this is going to be a bumpy landing! Oh, yeah, by the way, the FDA will be at the front door soon since they want to see all compliance met before the big spin off!

It all comes down to what "return" of investment money Abbott is getting back from the division. When HPD was spun off, I believe the employees retirement funds were turned over to the new spin off Hospira, and that money helped finance the upstart of the new company. Could it happen again? No doubt. But what cost cutting proceedures Newco takes would be up in the air. And I agree, ADD is being seperated for some reason.... spinoff, selloff, or relocation overseas?
Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 13/10/2011 - 14:52.
No knowledge of "spin off" but we were told ADD was not for sale. They did not say "no spin off". You are blind if you can't see what is happening. ADD is being segregated from Abt. Lab. Something big is going to happen next year! I pray we do not loose our retirement benefits we have earned.

All I can say is I was RIF'ed and it was the happiest day in my life. Abbott in the 1980's was a Great place to work. Now with the current board of directors and CEO, it's not a Great place anymore. Abbott will soon be nothing but a United States Company Name on all foreign products, if it's not already. If Dr. Abbott were alive he'ed fire them all, starting with the CEO.

WASHINGTON — Abbott Laboratories will eliminate 160 jobs from its diagnostic division as part of a multiyear effort to cut costs and boost revenue for the business.
The company, based in North Chicago, Ill., notified employees Wednesday that it would cut 150 manufacturing positions from its Santa Clara, Calif., location by the end of 2012. The work will be outsourced to contractors. The action does not affect other employees at the site who work in research and development and sales and marketing. Ten more positions will be eliminated at the diagnostic business' headquarters in Lake County, Ill., a company spokeswoman stated in an email.
Abbott has approximately 90,000 employees around the world.
The cuts are part of a 2008 plan to eliminate 1,000 jobs from the diagnostic unit, which sells blood and urine tests used to diagnose diseases and medical conditions. Diagnostics contributed $3.8 billion, or nearly 11 percent, of Abbott's $35 billion in sales last year. The company also markets a variety of prescription drugs, nutritionals and medical devices.
The company's stock rose 30 cents to $51.22 in midday trading.

What happened to the big yuppie plan to move all the diognostics to Ireland and Germany? The Euro not doing so well? Poor implementation of an already bad plan? Too much Euro spent on compliance with both the ISO and FDA? Miles will not be happy with this bad plan. Poor management ran the division into the ground. Lack of long term planning and direction. Just short term planning. I never hear a plan from Abbott management for 5 years out, 10 years out. All I hear is where we will be in the next 90 days. 90 days! What the hell is that kind of planning? Short term planning "only" is not a way to run any business. I hope the yuppie management is the first to go. Good luck to everyone in ADD.
