Bio-Rad LSG: Why doesn't anyone here talk about it?

Have they become that irrelevant in the industry, or are they that perfect?

"Unimpressed by this and

"Unimpressed by this and still think that Bio-Rad lacks a culture of quality and innovation. Not all that hard to get nominated and considering the process, it is pretty easy for companies to game the system to get nominated."

I don't believe there were any award categories for quality or innovation so that's a separate issue (and one that I don't entirely disagree with). But the organizers been very transparent about the process:

http://www.lifescienceindustryawards.com/2011/methodology.html

and it's hard to see how companies could "game the system" when something like 6500 individual scientists participated. They've also been very open in past years in releasing the survey data for anyone to review which we've found very helpful.

RE: "Bio-Rad's baser

RE: "Bio-Rad's baser qualities aside, it looks like their customers like the equipment. 21 nominations!"

Sure!
For example, SELDI as a protein analysis instrument get nominations!
It really the case "looks like" customers like products, but in reality product so sucks that it will be discontinued soon.

The only benefit for this kind of survey is to provide top management excuse to award themselves more bonus.

Unimpressed by this and still think that Bio-Rad lacks a culture of quality and innovation. Not all that hard to get nominated and considering the process, it is pretty easy for companies to game the system to get nominated. Especially those companies that conduct business with Bioinformatics or other sponsors such as the Chempetitive Group.

Bio-Rad Acquires QuantaLife and Digital PCR Technology

Hercules, CA – October 5, 2011 – Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: BIO and BIOb), a
multinational manufacturer and distributor of life science research and clinical
diagnostics products, announced today that it has purchased QuantaLife, Inc. for $162
million in cash plus potential future milestone payments.
QuantaLife has developed an innovative digital PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction)
system that provides quantification of target molecules with unprecedented precision
and sensitivity. This next generation PCR technology builds on the well established
method of amplifying DNA that is used in research laboratories around the world. Digital
PCR provides researchers with a new tool for the detection of rare mutations including
distinguishing rare sequences in tumors, precise measurement of copy number
variation, and absolute quantification of gene expression.
“We are impressed with QuantaLife’s digital PCR technology and believe it will
complement Bio-Rad’s existing amplification business,” said Norman Schwartz,
Bio-Rad President and CEO. “This elegant solution expands the current state of the art
methods of quantitative PCR (qPCR), and we look forward to its adoption in life science
research.”
About QuantaLife
Based in Pleasanton, California, QuantaLife is a privately-held life sciences company
that provides advanced genetic analysis systems for research. QuantaLife has
commercialized the Droplet Digital™ (ddPCR) system, the most accurate
genetic analysis platform available today. The system is the first cost-effective, highresolution
platform available for the validation of next-generation sequencing
discoveries. It is easy to use, easy to automate, and easy to integrate into existing
workflows in both life science and clinical research labs. With the ddPCR system,
researchers can explore complex genetic landscapes in high-definition, discover new
disease associations, and define a new category of improved molecular diagnostic
tests.

"In a word: Sweatshop. How hard is it to make and sell a green polystyrene box with electrodes on either end? Ok, we'll give you that. Yes, you do that well! lol"

It sounds that you are not working for BR.
BR tried hard to outsource just the molding of the green box oversea, it took millions dollar and over 3 years. Even now, BR can only make the product at Hercules.

In short, incompetence makes BR outdated.

If BR would have just left the acquired companys alone so that these companys could have continue to operate relatively independently, it is very likely that BR's acquisitions would have been successful."

So BR way is almost bullet-proof way to make a company to fail?

It's worth to note that BR also had a tendency to promote folks from acquried companies who "fit BR culture".
For example, LL and HG from Ciphergen; who are main contributors for the former company's failure.

"Perhaps rather than moaning about the posts you should stop blindly following old fashioned dogma and start challenging the sterile systems and people within the organisation in order for it to change and survive.
Going right back to the start of this post. If you don't you will become irrelevant."

If it was that simple, the answer two the two questions would be:
Are they that perfect? --No, no company is perfect.
Are they irrelevant? --No, a company the size of Bio-Rad is not irrelevant and little risk of becoming so in the next 5 years at least. Love them or hate them, people know them by the green gel boxes...that identity alone will keep them relevant so long as people are running protein gels. Ask any of their competitors and I guarantee you that they train their sales teams to sell against the green boxes.

That's true...

They are from their customers.

The vast majority of comments

The vast majority of comments on this board that speak negatively of BR are not from employees of the company. These are mostly negative spins from the sad, sad reps @ Life, Eppendorf, et al. that have the poorest customer service in the life science service industry.

Anonymity has advantages, such as no accountability for the drivel spewed on a message board titled "Rumor Mill."

Overall, I have my doubts they would sell -not until the venerable DS and AS are dead and in the ground.

High level managers at LSG

High level managers at LSG usually being forced out or laid off (such as PM, RP,JS,etc.), they have no interest to post here.
Whatever happened to that clueless micromanager JS anyway? Has he found some other company to ruin? I pity the working for him.
