Bio-Rad LSG: Why doesn't anyone here talk about it?

Have they become that irrelevant in the industry, or are they that perfect?

A manager should broaden our

A manager should broaden our outlook, push us beyond our comfort zones, help us be successful, exemplify the corporate values, and focus us on learning, serving, persevering, leading, and advancing. My manager does none of this, does yours?

They are all stick and no

They are all stick and no carrot, where everyone should be the same corporate reflection. Eventually, the rah-rah sis boom bah culture produces one question: "Why?"

Paying for surveys is a

Paying for surveys is a Bio-Sad strategy. It is a mediocre place to work at best. Most of my managers have been ineffective, knowledgeless, arrogant, kool-aide drinking cheerleaders. They are glorified C players that have been promoted in order to perpetuate mediocrity.

NS's statement "We are living

NS's statement "We are living in the 'golden age of biology' and Bio-Rad is in a great position to make meaningful contributions to the advancement of science and healthcare." is funny. Does he or his management team understand biology/ science at all?

It was copied/pasted from a press release from 15 years ago?

This all comes to the

This all comes to the background of the top management. Check it out and you would know.

All these payola 'surveys'

All these payola 'surveys' are meaningless. Any company can be on top of a 'survey' at any time.

working so many years for

working so many years for Bio-rad, made me bitter for Biotech industry-therefore I don't understand why Bio-rad is one of the best places to work for...This is just a ridiculous survey

Bio-Rad is not a great place

Bio-Rad is not a great place to work. I thought this ranking was pretty laughable.

Here is the bad:
This is one of the cheapest companies I have ever seen. Examples the $50 Amex gift card at Christmas -funds to cover it come from employees being required to use corp Amex card for expenses. Stock options and bonuses only go to top management.
There are some pretty ineffective managers there. PC, BC, SK, KB, LC, JW, RK, KB, EL, etc.
Real lack of innovation -very conservative approach to technology. Do not expect to be on the cutting edge of science there.
Politics -some of the worst I have seen. People building and protecting their own little kingdoms. Makes for a lot of unproductive effort.

The good:
They offer some pretty decent training, so it is a good place to learn

So some third rate biz rag

So some third rate biz rag ran a shoddy survey. Doesn't change their poorly run HR department. Bio-Rad is still a cheap company to work for. NS is dreaming in that press release. Actually, he's probably just dreaming of retiring. They pay poorly and it's full of people either hoping to retire soon, too lazy to go someplace better, low-achievers, and a few optimists hoping that things will improve.

Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc.

Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: BIO) and (NYSE: BIO.B), has been named one of the 'Best Places to Work' in the San Francisco Bay Area for 2010 by the San Francisco Business Times.

said Norman Schwartz, Bio-Rad President and Chief Executive Officer. "We are living in the 'golden age of biology' and Bio-Rad is in a great position to make meaningful contributions to the advancement of science and healthcare."

How credible does this ranking mean?

how was the Q1 for LSG?

how was the Q1 for LSG? anybody knows, where did the DH go?

"JH is on a special

"JH is on a special project."

When a manager at Bio-Rad is moved from his former position to work on a "special project," it is NOT a promotion.

I bet this week's Q1 earnings

I bet this week's Q1 earnings report will be dismal for LSG. Then this will be followed by an "emergency" sr. management meeting where they'll all scramble to Hercules to show how everything will be OK later in the year. It's the same thing every year.
You'd think they'd learn after years of repeating this same BS.

Here's what needs to change:
-Wrest control from the international subsidiaries. Yes, it may be tax beneficial they way they're set up now. But each sub manager has his own little kingdom that makes it difficult to enact global changes that results in loss of potential sales, higher overhead, etc.
-Reduce the sales force in Europe. This has got to be the most bloated group in the world. Most likely because of Euro-socialist labor laws that prevent them from downsizing. The worst of these is France. A huge country, LSG sells almost nothing there yet has a relatively large sales force.
-LSG should have control over its own sales organizations. This goes back to the subsidiary model. Get rid of these tin horn dictators, especially Sanjiv, and put the sales organizations under real sales managers. Most of the sub manager are diagnostics folks and don't know and care about LSG. Then some are just idiots like Sanjiv.
-Kill 20% of the products that are underperformers.
-Stop investing in projects that should have been done ten years ago, i.e. new gels, new chromatography systems.
-Start investing in acquiring some consumables, especially antibodies. Stop pretending that little venture in China will actually result in something tangible (except poor quality antibodies).
-The biggest thing that needs to be done is for the Schwartz family to give up their voting control over the BOD. Sell off some class B shares to individual investors and funds. They need some outside opinion but not so much of direction driven by investment analysts. A balance would be best.

Is JH still managing LSG? I

Is JH still managing LSG? I heard a rumor that he was moved out of this position a while back. If not JH, who is the new manager?
JH is on a special project. He was replaced by SJ from manufacturing. Nice guy, but no strategic product knowledge or market knowledge.

I just applied for a sr mgt

I just applied for a sr mgt position. The requirements were that I needed to be a washed up has been looking for a place to end my career or a lifer with no relevant experience.

The entire Waltham, MA

The entire Waltham, MA operation should be shut down and relocated. The cost of keeping it open does not really merit the cost. No idea why the management keeps it open. The people there can move west or easily be replaced.
There are a lot of offices and facilities that should be shut down. But that will only happen if there is a strong leader willing to make hard decisions and who has a strategy. That is not BC, nor NS, nor any other senior manager.

"I heard BC is looking to

"I heard BC is looking to move to Life Tech as soon as he possibly can"

Really doubt this statement. Why would this guy leave unless he is forced to do so? His total compensation was over $950K for 2009. Pretty nice package for a guy who knows very little and does even less to get the business to grow.

He and all of the other lifer's there are like ticks. They are planted firmly there and will suck out all they can for as long as they can.

I wish they dumped it

I wish they dumped it already. I haven't seen such a bad managed company! Good managers are gone or forced to change their position-
do you know what's gonna happen with the subsidaries? they cost alot of money...they should just close some of those..

"Any predictions as to when

"Any predictions as to when LSG will just be dumped?"
long time rumor was NS looking for LSG buyer before recession. What's the progress so far?

'The whole company is messed

'The whole company is messed up from the top down. NS would have been a mediocre middle manager at best, if not for being the son of DS. DS is no longer able to keep up with the company strategy and sleeps through most meetings.'
Not just messed up, but floundering too.

He's out of his league at Life. He probably has been dreaming of going there for years, I wonder how long Life has had his resume. He's lucky if he can get a mid-level Director position there.

If that's the case for BC, what about the poor saps that work for him. They must be even more pathetic and couldn't find jobs at other companies if they wanted to. And they better start working hard, because LSG is going down the tubes. J**n S**aldi was smart saw the writing on the wall, and was quick to take his Harvard MBA and get the heck out of there.

Where would BR QSD move

it's true, they're developing

it's true, they're developing one, but not sure when it will come to market-
Do you mean they're seriously developing a flow cytometer? Didn't they have one years ago? This will be another case of last to market and then wonder why it's not successful.

so whats going on with biorad

Thanks for the biz. I guess

Thanks for the biz. I guess you realized it was better than the competition or you wouldn't have purchased.

I just bought a Proteon.

I just bought a Proteon. (Nice mouth you you have there, I certainly would not of made my purchase from you.)

Nice try. So, which GE sales

Nice try. So, which GE sales rep or app person are you? JS? ProteOn is kicking your butt and making your lives miserable. That's the honest truth. Keep up your negative strategies, customers are realizing what giant a-holes you really are.

The Proteon is a damm fine

The Proteon is a damm fine instrument, just ask Biacore (GE).

"I heard that they are going

"I heard that they are going to stop selling the Proteon SPR instrument and the Bioplex, and then later this year will sell off LSG after they can hide the huge losses these products have incurred."

Selling off LSG make sense business wise, since BR is using loans to pay for day to day operation.
So they are trying to reduce revenue, while improving profit margin? It sounds large scale lay-off will come.

Don't work for a competitor.

Don't work for a competitor. But, I have better info than you do as far as the profitability of those product lines. Bio-Plex didn't make any profit for the first 8 years of its time on the market. Currently, it eeks out a small profit. That SPR product will continue to reside in a big negative profit hole for at least the next few years. Top line revenue and growth doesn't always mean a product is healthy.

What competitor do you work

What competitor do you work for? The Proteon SPR system has been a troublesome and expensive acquisition/development, however, the BioPlex has been a very successful product line! Get your facts correct please!

I heard that they are going

Thanks to all that responded

Thanks to all that responded to the job inquiry from Bio-Rad. Decided not to pull the trigger after looking at the big picture and concluding that I did not need more of the same. Anyhow, there are some very green pastures despite what some would have us believe...

LSG has consistently brought

LSG has consistently brought in outside management for the past few years and they have all been failures. LSG has also made several acquisitions over the past few ten years and they have all been failures, including MJ. The CFO will back me up on the MJ failure. LSG got a bargain that cost them three times what they paid for it and then killed a brand with a wildy popular following to convert it to a beige box. Ho hum.

LSG management needs to realize that growth will be slow, cut back to the ten core products that make money and stop dinking around with other stuff. This is what will make NS happy because LSG will be more profitable. Get rid of all the instrumentation that lists for more than $75k.

I would strongly recommend

I would strongly recommend not working for BR sales in North America. It is lead by PC who has not made quota a single year. DH (supposed head of sales) is a nice guy, but that is about it. He will never challenge PC since anyone who doesn't play the 'yes man' is conveniently laid off. And dont even talk about the tactical marketing group. It is more an over-paid tech support group. For example, the marketing plan is created by PC and the sales managers.

PC loves to give the sales team huge quotas based on his desires instead of reality, then he will implement programs that directly undercut the ability of the sales personnel to reach those quotas. PC has to be the most short sighted exec I have ever had the displeasure to report to.

They are working on a cell

They are working on a cell counter that can also image the cells, at least that is what GXD claims. If it is like their other innovations (Calligrapher, Experion, etc) it will crash and burn. Mostly due to not knowing their customers' needs - in other words BR is very R&D driven and then they try to convince the customers of the need.

Who got flushed? What

Who got flushed? What functions How many people? Anybody forced to switch to a new position as a result of the changes?

"I heard LSG recently had

"I heard LSG recently had some layoffs. True?"
yes. It's a routine flush of people they don't want to keep.

I heard LSG recently had some

I heard LSG recently had some layoffs. True?

Any feedback on how that

Any feedback on how that 'new' Eva Green supermix is doing?

"The long life gels are way

"The long life gels are way overdue, hmm perhaps ten years. Why would customers switch from their Novex gels. They love those. Where is the motivation for the customer?

LSG has gone from a top five life science company when I joined to barely hanging in the top twenty. Too many incompetent management decisions.

Too many lifers in LSG with no other corporate experience."

Bio-RAD LSG is on its way to top 40 lif science company for sure. Why its owner is still keeping it?

I heard a weird rumor that

I heard a weird rumor that Bio-Rad is getting into flow cytometry? What the heck do they know about that? What would this report into - PFD?
