Bio-Rad LSG: Why doesn't anyone here talk about it?

Have they become that irrelevant in the industry, or are they that perfect?

I heard BC is looking to move

I heard BC is looking to move to Life Tech as soon as he possibly can.

it's true, they're developing

it's true, they're developing one, but not sure when it will come to market-
Do you mean they're seriously developing a flow cytometer? Didn't they have one years ago? This will be another case of last to market and then wonder why it's not successful.

it's true, they're developing

Thanks for the biz. I guess

Thanks for the biz. I guess you realized it was better than the competition or you wouldn't have purchased.

I just bought a Proteon.

I just bought a Proteon. (Nice mouth you you have there, I certainly would not of made my purchase from you.)

Nice try. So, which GE sales

Nice try. So, which GE sales rep or app person are you? JS? ProteOn is kicking your butt and making your lives miserable. That's the honest truth. Keep up your negative strategies, customers are realizing what giant a-holes you really are.

The Proteon is a damm fine

The Proteon is a damm fine instrument, just ask Biacore (GE).

"I heard that they are going

"I heard that they are going to stop selling the Proteon SPR instrument and the Bioplex, and then later this year will sell off LSG after they can hide the huge losses these products have incurred."

Selling off LSG make sense business wise, since BR is using loans to pay for day to day operation.
So they are trying to reduce revenue, while improving profit margin? It sounds large scale lay-off will come.

Don't work for a competitor.

Don't work for a competitor. But, I have better info than you do as far as the profitability of those product lines. Bio-Plex didn't make any profit for the first 8 years of its time on the market. Currently, it eeks out a small profit. That SPR product will continue to reside in a big negative profit hole for at least the next few years. Top line revenue and growth doesn't always mean a product is healthy.

What competitor do you work

What competitor do you work for? The Proteon SPR system has been a troublesome and expensive acquisition/development, however, the BioPlex has been a very successful product line! Get your facts correct please!

I heard that they are going

I heard that they are going to stop selling the Proteon SPR instrument and the Bioplex, and then later this year will sell off LSG after they can hide the huge losses these products have incurred.

Thanks to all that responded

Thanks to all that responded to the job inquiry from Bio-Rad. Decided not to pull the trigger after looking at the big picture and concluding that I did not need more of the same. Anyhow, there are some very green pastures despite what some would have us believe...

LSG has consistently brought

LSG has consistently brought in outside management for the past few years and they have all been failures. LSG has also made several acquisitions over the past few ten years and they have all been failures, including MJ. The CFO will back me up on the MJ failure. LSG got a bargain that cost them three times what they paid for it and then killed a brand with a wildy popular following to convert it to a beige box. Ho hum.

LSG management needs to realize that growth will be slow, cut back to the ten core products that make money and stop dinking around with other stuff. This is what will make NS happy because LSG will be more profitable. Get rid of all the instrumentation that lists for more than $75k.

I would strongly recommend

I would strongly recommend not working for BR sales in North America. It is lead by PC who has not made quota a single year. DH (supposed head of sales) is a nice guy, but that is about it. He will never challenge PC since anyone who doesn't play the 'yes man' is conveniently laid off. And dont even talk about the tactical marketing group. It is more an over-paid tech support group. For example, the marketing plan is created by PC and the sales managers.

PC loves to give the sales team huge quotas based on his desires instead of reality, then he will implement programs that directly undercut the ability of the sales personnel to reach those quotas. PC has to be the most short sighted exec I have ever had the displeasure to report to.

They are working on a cell

They are working on a cell counter that can also image the cells, at least that is what GXD claims. If it is like their other innovations (Calligrapher, Experion, etc) it will crash and burn. Mostly due to not knowing their customers' needs - in other words BR is very R&D driven and then they try to convince the customers of the need.

Who got flushed? What

Who got flushed? What functions How many people? Anybody forced to switch to a new position as a result of the changes?

"I heard LSG recently had

"I heard LSG recently had some layoffs. True?"
yes. It's a routine flush of people they don't want to keep.

Any feedback on how that

Any feedback on how that 'new' Eva Green supermix is doing?

"The long life gels are way

"The long life gels are way overdue, hmm perhaps ten years. Why would customers switch from their Novex gels. They love those. Where is the motivation for the customer?

LSG has gone from a top five life science company when I joined to barely hanging in the top twenty. Too many incompetent management decisions.

Too many lifers in LSG with no other corporate experience."

Bio-RAD LSG is on its way to top 40 lif science company for sure. Why its owner is still keeping it?

I heard a weird rumor that

I heard a weird rumor that Bio-Rad is getting into flow cytometry? What the heck do they know about that? What would this report into - PFD?

"Seems like SH actually knows

"Seems like SH actually knows what the heck she's doing. Those TGX gels were a stroke of genius."

This was meant as sarcasm for those of you who don't know the history.

The extended shelf life gels

The extended shelf life gels are long over due. The poor quality of the Ready gels made customers unhappy for a long time. We will see if the quality problems are addressed with the new ones.

BTW -SH was not the person with the idea to create a long life gel. Just right place at the right time.

People should talk about LSG.

People should talk about LSG. It's rampant with losers and people who've been promoted beyond their skill level. Just to name a few PC, BC (NASD), RLA (PFD), MH(PFD), AT, RP (LSD).
LC the HR guy is a pathetic boob.
BC (VP of LSG) is too clueless or put many of those above people in their positions. Plus he's too busy watching his back since LSG can't make its profit number.

Seems like SH actually knows what the heck she's doing. Those TGX gels were a stroke of genius.

The TGX gels will save LSG,

Bio-Rad CDG is not LSG.
For Illumina, they doubled their work force. Dionex had no layoff for years.

They are not doing all that

They are not doing all that well. The life science segment was down in 2008 as well. Declined again in 2009. Not a happy trend.

Q4 the poor sales team was pushed to bring in every dollar they could. To pull of a good Q4, they had to pull some Q1 2010 business forward. Prediction: Q1 2010 LSG will not reach targets.

"revenues for the Life

"revenues for the Life Science segment were $631.5 million, down 1.9% over the prior year, or an increase of 0.8% on a currency-neutral basis."
It's a decrease of sales. But US dollar worth more.

Figures are out, see

Figures are out, see www.bio-rad.com
Looks like LSG is still alive with some moderate growth in Q4!!

Let me chime in here about

Let me chime in here about working in sales for Bio-Rad LSG. I would vet out the regional manager. Some of them are really good and know how to sell and do a good job looking out for their reps and providing support. Others are much less effective and spend too much time trying to make themselves look good.

The marketing there is pretty variable. There are a couple of good people in the product development groups. The NASD team is pretty young/inexperienced and is run by a clueless wonder.

The company overall is not very innovative. It can be challenging to make plan as a result. I would take a look at their annual and quarterly reports. That will give you a good idea on how well sales have been. Good luck on figuring this one out.

Why the animosity here? And

Why the animosity here? And to those that have posted constructive comments, my sincere appreciation. To reiterate, a recruiter called me about an open field position within the LSG. I have now been in various field-based positions for more than 15 years. For that reason, I first do some background research...and came across this thread. it is now quite obvious that one individual has WAY too much time on their hands....

Having worked there for many years don't do it. LSG is full of people who are too fearful or lazy to work for a better company. There are some good, talented people, but not enough to turn the course of a doomed entity.

'pay seems decent'?

You wouldn't be happening to be currently employed at MacDonald's are you?

To the best interest for NS, perserve the current LSG status while seeking a buyer within a year is the least risky route.

The people you mention are so embedded in the company that a big house cleaning will cannot be done. I would agree that PC and BC need to be replaced with people from the outside. LC is a joke what does that guy do to earn his salary? Sign forms? Ramble incoherently at meetings? He seems to have plenty of time to walk around and socialize while the people who report to him actually work.

Just get rid of the following

Just get rid of the following people:
PC-has he made plan since he's been in charge?
LC (in HR) a total tool that enables bad managers
RP leading LSD R&D into irrelevance
TS (in LSD) what exactly does he do?
Business development people (TM, GV) haven't accomplished anything, ever
all division managers
anyone hand-picked by BC (the VP) for key positions
NS should make everyone in LSG with pay grade higher than 11 justify their jobs and re-interview in order to keep them
