On revenue outgrowing market, for Q1 2010, LIFE beat Sigma year on year, underperformed Illumina, Qiagen, and Thermo. I would consider those companies to be a pretty good definition of the "market". So from public data, I would conclude that LIFE revenue is not outgrowing the market.
On price increases, I'm sure with 50,000+ SKUs, you can claim that your mean or median price increase is single digits. There are thousands of products with no price increases (and minimal sales) for 2010. There have also been products (without improvement or size/unit changes) with triple digit price increases in the last year.
Where are your facts? Speak with data not speculation or opinion. Business as a whole growing upper single digits/low double digits. Price increases don't even break a single percentage point. All public domain.

Unfortunately, your revenue growth isn't matching your price increases, indicating decreasing sales in many product categories.
It's called continuous improvement. Manufacturing will always change and before you let your cynicism say it, we know the change needs to be a positive one. If you hadn't noticed the company has changed. Revenues outgrowing market, improved profitability, reinvestment into the business and operations. Keep watching and it will change some more. Every day, every week.
So next month is 7 years of GL leadership in CB, and manufacturing is still in need of changes. Thought that one would have been nailed down by now... Oh right, he's been busy sorting out manufacturing at all the acquired sites.
Wrong. BA from Grand Island is the new manufacturing head in CB. This was announced weeks ago. BA has been transitioning over as BP transitions back to Austin. I think the changes started at CB will continue.

Actually some patent were thrown out but they have plenty of others to snooker the competition (the referenced "isolated DNA" patent situation is under appeal and will eventually be overturned as previously stated). At teh end of the day the Courts, ACLU and the hysterics of people like Doogen (DUKE), will have done nothing but stir up uncertainly in the market. Companies will not be funded and ideas will not come to marker all because of these naive ivory tower types.

Patents were not "thrown out," only certain claim. This case will be turned over at the Federal Courts (most District court verdicts are).
I for one am shocked to find gossip on the Rumor Mill, though I would guess that this topic is of high import to the 250 soon to be former LIFE employees losing their jobs in Camarillo. Any guesses as to which site is next in line to be closed after the dust settles from the Biosource shutdown?
This could be quite horrific for the industry as a whole. Genes are not "man-made", and therefore shouldn't be considered for a patent.

Reminds me of the state training funds being used to "train" MBAs and PhDs to fill in request forms for travel. Just so we could pay more for travel than booking it ourselves on the web, resulting in executives getting better perks from the travel agency.

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- Laboratory supplier Life Technologies Corp. says it expects to add 100 jobs in Frederick by expanding its operations there.
The Frederick County Commissioners on Tuesday pledged $50,000 worth of services, enabling the company to qualify for a $500,000 state economic development grant.
The Carlsbad, Calif.-based company currently employs 300 in Frederick.
The local operations director says the new jobs will be in manufacturing, research and development.
It doesn't happen everywhere. Just companies run by management with overblown expectations of entitlement. Places where the most profitable product is selling stock to your own employees. The price increases LIFE has enacted over the last few years will eventually bite back at them. I looked at a LIFE vector last week and realized it was hundreds less expensive to have the functional parts of it synthesized in the backbone of my choice... Yet another instance of a LIFE product disappearing of my lab benches because of non-competitive pricing.
Come on...It's everywhere the same. If you can't live with this change something, start up your own business and stop complaining.

The same old bullshit! Tens of millions spent by the company on remodeling. Thousands more spent on catering everyday for all the paper pushers, and they come back and give us the business about "tough times" and how that relates to raises. The employees who make this company money are for sure not rewarded while the tenants upstairs are always rewarded tremendously.
What ass did you kiss to get that kind of raise and ICP?? I did the same quality work as last year with nothing bad on my review in either year and pulled down 1% less this year. The company wastes so much damn money and it will always be at the expense of employee"s merit increases.
Yes, absolutely there will be more layoffs. When? sometimes in the future. Where? one or more sites domestic and international. Hope that help you.

I would hope that the Camarillo people that cannot get a transfer could land at Amgen, but when they are laying of 20-30 people a month like clockwork, good luck with that.......
The closure of Camarillo is sad, but the reality is, it is needed. The building is of extrememly poor design, and is not large enough for the amount of business they do. Heck, they don't even have enough cubes to hold the office staff they have.
The statement of the management not having a clue is pretty much on target also. There is alot of things they cannot do logistically since they don't own the building, but everything is just an out of control mess on top of that. The planning is haphazard, the manufacturing is uncontrolled, there is so little documentation that is in order, it is sad. Hopefully things can change for the better when they land in Frederick.

Closure of Camarillo was long overdue. Good people will lose their jobs. Luckily Amgen is just down the road, for those who can win a position there. The failure of Camarillo was, quite simply, a failure of leadership. There were too many fiefdoms and on one could see past their own kingdom to make the best decisions for the business. It's a sad story, but one that isn't unique to LIFE/IVGN.

Mine was 3.05% so considering the economy and intrest rates at only 0.5% and its more than inflation, can,t complain.
Also I note this blog has been pretty quiet which is very nice as no one ever says and thing positive on it, its just doom and gloom so perhaps things are looking up a little? We can always live in hope. I am sure some one will find something to moan about soon though.

I agree Life's Customers make Life a great company. Employees also make Life a great company. I would like to know which reps have been let go are considered high performers and why. Life has thousands of reps and there is always a degree of turnover (6% in 2009). Without you being specific it would take too long to 'figure it out' if at all. I think you're just trying to make mischief with no facts. You've shown that twice in recent times already. Share with us what you truly know.
Its a "general" post because the sad thing is that it is happening all over in the US territories...Good reps getting thrown under the bus and no one giving a damn...Reps, who instead of kissing someones behind cared more about the customer than the political BS of the company...God forbid we remember who made this company the great company it used to be and could be...the CUSTOMERS!!
