coming B4 year end.
yes, more synergies and consolidations are coming.
like I said. there is no move. get back to work.
What does Buba think of all this:hogwash man !
so are they moving FC ?
that was such a hit has celera diagnostic... what's the link anyways behind pharma and genomics ? ZILTCH !
I think life has already thought about the next step. they don't just want to a tools company, they're trying to become a biopharmaceutical (tech + pharma)
Well clearly the latest news from AACR are showing some reality check and some restraint on this scam "Cancer genomes are extraordinarily complicated," Ellis said in a statement, adding the result of his and his colleagues research "explains our difficulty in predicting outcomes and finding new treatments."
Hey Greg, how about you start giving some respect to reality.
The problem here is that scientists are at the mercy or their own cheap talk. Some of them in bed with the notion of bad gene=cancer. Ya there is thousands of mutation shifts per cell per mass per environment per genome. It's like the mightiest of all mighty Rubik cube, except it keeps changing before you change one piece.
Imagine the same billion dollar invested in exercise VS less sugar, meat, salt and TV.
I challenge any frigging molecular cancer genetics on that premise. I can save more lives now with clean water than a million sequencers will in 10 years.
The model is flawed.
So eventually we know everyones' genome and every gene for every type of cancer and genetic disease. Fine, I'll accept that. And then . . . what? Ever think of what you would need to do after that? Perhaps some drug discovery and/or regenerative medicine? Or at least gaining an understanding of the patient and disease on a level BEYOND the gene? In other words, maybe needing applications that Life Tech has basically taken for granted lately, if not treated with outright disdain?
I guess this is a case study in what happens when people with only the vaguest whiff of a scientific background decide they want to run a great big biotech. The ideas are well-considered but fundamentally flawed because their originators don't know as much as they think or would like. Same idea--someone can put a lot of work into building a table, but if they don't understand woodworking and the people who would need the table then the table is going to suck and people will dislike it. And if this person is greedy, they then try to sell this crap table to a person for the same price as a premium piece of furniture.
Same idea as, say, some of the instruments we've been seeing from Life.
SO to recap--this looks like a case in which arrogant pricing and business tactics meet flawed understandings of current science and the actual marketplace. It's GREAT to be an outside observer of this, an example of a young industry learning by making big mistakes.
Sequencing everyone's genome will be $1.
Will that be for each genome, or do you think the Ion Torrent will get that down to $1 for everyone? LIFE is claiming Lucifer's law (sequencing corollary to Moore's law) is 10x increase in throughput every 6 months. So we should be down to a penny a genome by 2014...
I don't care if you sequence everything in the world, ion torrent won't solve 100% of the world's problems...
Sequencing everyone's genome will be $1. Life Technologies will go bankrupt because of altruism. After everyone sees their genome, they get off their fat a$$ and exercise, improving global health.
GL returns to his home planet, job well done.
Patenting genes for cash and beating cancer with an ion torrent... Good one, there is still people dying from dehydration and this clown is saying that sequencing a genome will give us THE ANSWER to cancer...
Give us a sample.
The amount of bullshit coming out of GL's mouth at the Clinton initiative is mindblowing ! What on earth is that loser doing there... ridigigilous ! He is worst than a bank CEO !
nearly nonstop layoffs in Eugene
Push off JR in CT and move everything to FC. They will do better.
LIFE had some lay-offs in the last couple weeks to make the numbers look better by the end of Q1.
What locations were affected during these lay-offs? How significant was the impact?
moving ion torrent is really not much, its a tiny lab in SSF, who cares, it's irrelevant, short term lease is probably much simpler right now. Why fuck something up when the heat is on... However if I were in SSF I would be really worried about the cubicle-powerpoint meetings going on in FC behind IT backs...
Moving IT is irrelevant to me compared to the Invitrogen idiots rearing their heads to slow down consumable, technical and manufacturing support.
here is your news on Tuesday: We are not moving. Get back to work.
Meeting on Tues to learn the fate of FC...rumor is Bay Area will reconcile all sites in South SF close or at Ion Torrent.
The only way is down, both for IP and margins since they did not try to keep that market share properly. Unless they have completely overhauled the synthesis SOPs. Last time I checked they were using expensive slow tech for synthesis (ie, old 3900... hahahah).
There is almost no internal investment in that market right now. Cut cut cut, every dollar going to Ian Da Tarent. Only dollars going to consumables is via real time monitoring of orders such as Ipads with internal stock purchase IT software, so every crony has an Ipad even if most still think its a run rate and regional business (dear sir, we expect another 20 TLDA order from you this month since we see you ordered them exactly the same day last year... failure to do so will increase by 10% your pricing and shipping charges). Then 1 week before quarter end, they drop their pants and bend over (we have to stop this hockey effect, said a wise junior manager)...
enough with the instrument side. does anyone have any news on the consumables side...like pcr products taqman assays?
You got an Attune ! Of course your rep will say its great, they will fire him if he doesn't sell it. That unit must have been stocked since last year... I think globally Attune is probably more useful than Biotrove, that is one serious piece of junk... Life tech, if you ask an order by the last two weeks of a quarter, you can expect massive discounts, for anything... Remember this next June, you can seriously save 20 to 60% off your current quote. Buy in bulk, don't have them set you up in a stream (or supply freezer) or they will screw you.
Where is my SOLID I bought last year? Did it float away? Is it radioactive?
I need to go buy another HiSeq, or 1000 Ion Torrent machines to do the same thing...
Yes there is a group in our building who have one, but we dont get along and when I asked what it was like idiot said that he didnt want to be redponsible and that I should have my own demo... How unhelpful!!
70 perc off cant be bad though, lol
Well the rep said its really easy to use... So are you saying that isnt true???
I'm sure your rep could arrange a demo at one of the many other sites where he/she has placed sold an instrument.
god help you when using attune
Same thing for Analyzers. What are you waiting for? Christmas. If they need to move stock they can do what they want. I'd check some reviews first though.
Did you ever use the Attune, please?? They say its a new unit but they need to move stock. Are they going to discontinue making it??
Can someone help!?
End of Q1 Thursday. Got to sell some of those A**tunes...
Biggest EVER Sale at ABI - UK
Rep quoted me 70 percent off if I placed a quick order for the Attune Flow Cyt.
My manager thinks I got him a bargain. This is what is happening at Life Technologies!!!! Why do they say such high prices if they can offer so much lower.
Did anyone ever use the attune, please?????
Is there something wrong with it?
Solid doesn't make much money - mainly because they often have to give them away to beat the opposition (Illumina). They basically got schooled by Illumina in terms of workflow, quality, reliability etc. Hiseq was the final nail in the coffin. They barely even mention it any more: - just the Ion Torrent promises.
thanks for the comment on the sinking businesses
i work on the BT machine and you put it perfectly, a lot of the failures were because of mismanagement---most of the people that orignially worked on it have either quit or transferred themselves to different projects.
I dont know about Attune, never really heard of it within the company. SOLID i thought was doing well and generated a lot of money for the company???
The Biotrove acquisition didn't cost much because it was almost bankrupt. The integration however is a spectacle of mismanagement, from product alignment to manufacturing. The instrument still uses hundreds of parts and consumables not made or controlled by Life Tech. The panels are still from SAB now part of Qiagen, the same product Life Tech loves to put down... Why would anyone at Life Tech use SAB assays and Roche Taq for a product is beyond my understanding. Once again, one layer of manager completely detached from the goal and direction. This is mostly because of Life Tech's planning without understanding and milestone acceptance. If you offer a product and pass a milestone, doesn't matter if it is made by your competition. So they probably loss a bit of money. Solid has probably been the biggest money dump, Attune is another huge one (never any synergy found), Ion Torrent is another dump but it viewed as a huge brand uplift and at this point has a lot of attraction, it's just way too low cost and I think life will see a saturation sooner than anticipated profits. Once again, they will see that a human can only handle so much data generation (and library prep !). This is not unique to Life tech, this is unique to idiots who think nurses and doctors will start doing full exomes and genomes in their clinic (as Greg Lucier would like you to think), that vision will cost them.
is BioTrove a part of this sinking acquired business?
I understand head of HR and CEO doing the rounds to carefully review some managers out there... The clock is ticking for a few of them because they are simply destroying acquired business instead of creating growth.
everyone should just ignore this clown.....he or she seems to feel the need to comment on every post (seriously, who does this?) and for some reason, is pathologically incapable of making a sound, persuasive counter-argument to the point at hand. obviously here to dilute the conversation."
Hey Jacka$$ - more than one person posting here. Many more.
Swinging away at ghosts are we?
stock is flat to minus since one year, there is no other place to go than acquisition and the last one is going to be a real bitch to grow... Organic growth has never been a GL model, he doesn't know how to do that. His last move I think is deadly because it is to fix a major issue, the fact that Life got pounded in NGS.
Nope. I doubt many others truly have either.
Of course, you must remember...it's always someone else's fault. Right?
everyone should just ignore this clown.....he or she seems to feel the need to comment on every post (seriously, who does this?) and for some reason, is pathologically incapable of making a sound, persuasive counter-argument to the point at hand. obviously here to dilute the conversation.
I guess you never experienced the Ptr Wlch back-stab
Nope. I doubt many others truly have either.

"However, it has been a very rare occasion when I have seen someone, a person with "good ideas and work ethic" as you word it, pushed aside and not utilized. "
No, but LIFE's falling stock price should change everything.
How profound. A Wall Street sage has dropped knowledge on the dirty and unwashed. Feel better now?
It goes up, it goes down, it goes up again. Hmmm, Kind of sounds like every other Biotech stock out there and most any other stock as well.
One again, issues that are not unique to Lifetech. The economy is not doing well overall and it's not because of big bad Lifetech despite what a few hate mongers on this site would like you to believe.
actually the stock price is way up since 2009 and i am making a lot of money thanks to lucifer
irrelevant to the point, but nice to hear nonetheless.
You sound naive, co-dependent or suffer from Charlie Sheen syndrome! I hear they laugh at you and use you as a tool for their own success.
how to change your life
Yep. It's me who is naive. All who disagree with you must be.
What a wonderful world you must live in.
Your crusade against Lifetech will not change anything.
i worked there for a some time and found the place to be an accumulation of sycophants. they were always rewarded for the most trivial accomplishments that had nothing to do with any of the projects.
those that had good ideas or work ethic were often pushed into dead end projects where their skills were never put to good use
i don't doubt that Life has some smart people, but i do doubt that the company knows how to recognize and reward them
Yes. We got it. Sycophants, stooges, toadies etc etc. Lifetech is full of monsters and horrible people.
Of course, in general, I have experienced the opposite of what you say. I presume that this means I am lying and/or a "toady" since I disagree with your eloquent bitching.
I certainly have seen some injustice during my time here, but that is true of all the places I have worked. However, it has been a very rare occasion when I have seen someone, a person with "good ideas and work ethic" as you word it, pushed aside and not utilized. In fact, at the site I work at, you don't seem to advance very far unless you work hard and are involved in projects to improve process flow or save money. Some people are comfortable just drawing a paycheck and working in the lab while others want more responsibility. You can choose to do better or not. It's in your hands and I have not seen that unspeakable evil that you describe in every damn post.
Again, there are exceptions but those people don't seem to actually last very long once they are exposed.
I suspect you will disagree with this and call me a liar or stooge but, oh well. Life goes on. I hope you have a great weekend and don't bore too many others with your obsessive ranting about the corporate demons.
